The Culinary World of the Hill Country

The basic ingredients come from our lush alpine meadows, the recipes are plucked from the secret archives of our farmers’ wives. The way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, or so they say. Yet another reason you will fall in love with Styria!

Dining at a Mountain Inn
Many hill farms are still run the way they have always been. It is here that farmers’ wives serve guests fresh country butter, the best buttermilk you’ve ever tasted, farmhouse bacon and, of course, those hearty snacks for which they’re so renowned. When it’s time to celebrate the cattle’s return from summer pasture,
it’s also time for »Raungerln«.
With a little bit of luck, you might even receive some of these sweet balls of dough as a gift!

Styrian Cheese
The most wondrous product of the hill country continues to be Styrian Cheese.
Many rumors swirl around how it is actually made – and the farmers are reluctant to reveal the recipe. This flavorful, aromatic grey cheese is served with bread and butter, in Styrian-style pancakes, or as cheesy noodles.

A World of Pancakes
Styrian, wheat, sweet, »Holy Ghost« – pancakes of every kind, often enjoyed with Styrian cheese or honey. Whatever suits your taste.

Schnapps Distilleries
Our traditional distilleries produce spirits that are quite delicious. We enjoy drinking our schnapps after a meal, or as we raise our glasses in a toast – and our preference is for a genuine rowanberry or huckleberry schnapps.

Typically Styrian
We love to serve up delectable Styrian specialties: at the top of the list, pumpkin seed oil and apples – if genuine’s what you want, you have to go Styrian!

And then comes the wine:
In southern Styria, the hillsides are similar to those in Tuscany. Ripening here are prized whites and reds,
as well as the one-of-a-kind Schilcher.

Organic Farms & Farmers’ Markets
Many organic farmers sell their produce right there on the farm. And when it comes to the broadest imaginable selection of culinary experiences, the weekly farmers’ markets are definitely the place to be.
Homemade sausage and bacon, dairy produce made from cow, goat and sheep’s milk, fresh country breads, eggs from happy hens, crispy vegetables and salads, …
